Curriculum Updates
Second Grade
September:
2nd grade students are
working on their line unit as well and playing with a variety of lines in
rocket and owl drawings. Ask them if they can identify or draw these different
types of lines: straight, zig zag, wavy, squiggly, bumpy, loop-d-loop, or spiral.
October: 2nd grade students will begin the color unit also where we will learn how to organize colors by a sequence of mixing, how to mix our secondary colors, and that the rainbow has a specific order related to how colors are mixed. Look for our Mondrian paintings in late November.

Third Grade
September: 3rd grade students
are also working on their line unit as they manipulate line thickness,
overlapping line, and line variety in drawings of overlapping shapes and
leaves. Ask your children if they can
explain or give samples of: straightness, jaggedness, or curvature.
October: 3rd grade students will be moving into the color unit where we will learn how to organize colors into warm, cool, and neutral colors. Look for the warm and cool landscapes as they come out in late November.

Fourth Grade
September:
4th grade students
are starting their Square 1 Art fundraiser project. This fundraiser, is necessary to raise the
funds needed to buy tiles and glazes for the 4th grade legacy tiles which the
students will design and glaze later this year. For those who don't know, each student
creates a tile that they leave to the school and is mounted in the halls with
their class. It is an exciting time of year as we incorporate the tile design
into the Square 1 Art design. Our theme
is based on the style of Piet Mondrian which coincides nicely with our line
unit. Products can be purchased from the Square 1 Art Company that will come in
mid-December providing a sample of their tiles to keep as well as making nice
gifts for others. Ask your children
about their work.
October: 4th grade students have just completed their Square 1 Art submissions and they have been sent off to the company. Look for order forms to come out in late November so that you can help us raise the funds we need to order tiles and glazes for our 4th grade Legacy Tile Project and buy great gifts for the holidays too. We are also finishing up our line unit where we have been experimenting with line to create Zentangle portraits. Be sure to ask what Zentangles are. As we move into our next unit on color, we will learn about tertiary colors, how to organize color into a wheel, and that color can set a mood in art.
