- Value is how light or dark an object
is and can be represented by manipulating the closeness, thickness and
thinness, or lightness and darkness of line.
- Shading
illustrates levels of darkness and can be represented by manipulating the
closeness, thickness, and darkness of line.
- Texture
is the way a piece of art feels or looks like it feels and can be
created with line by using hatching or stippling.
- Certain
types of line convey movement or energy.
- Vocabulary: element, value, shading, texture,
convey, principals of design, movement, energy
- Record
and label drawn values of line in an art journal by
manipulating the thickness and thinness or lightness and darkness of line.
- Record
and label drawn textures in an art journal created by
hatching and stippling.
- Record related
vocabulary in an art journal.
- Experiment with line to convey movement or energy in a piece of 2D or
3D artwork by manipulating straight, smooth, jagged, and curved lines.

- Tertiary colors are created by mixing all of the primary colors, a primary and
secondary color, or two secondary colors together.
- Colors
can convey mood and emotion.
- A color
wheel is organized by the sequence of mixing.
- Vocabulary: Tertiary color, mood, emotion
- Synthesize a color wheel through
mixing by using primary, secondary, and tertiary colors.
- Record related
vocabulary in an art journal.
- Experiment with color to convey mood and emotion in a piece of 2D or 3D
artwork.

- Textures are the visual
appearances or tactile qualities of
surfaces and may include: smooth, rough, hard, soft, bumpy, sharp,
hairy, leathery, feathery, etc…
- Shapes and forms can have
geometric or organic characteristics and come in different sizes.
- Vocabulary: Visual appearance,
tactile, geometric, organic, characteristic, size
- Compare qualities of form
and categorize them into geometric or organic form.
- Develop a 2D or 3D piece of art that
experiments with texture and size using geometric and/or organic shapes and
form.

- Symmetry is when both
halves of an object mirror each other, have balance, and look the same.
- The line of symmetry is
the line that separates both halves.
- Asymmetry is when an
object does not have balance or symmetry.
- Patterns can rotate,
reflect, and slide.
- Vocabulary: Symmetry, mirror, balance, line of symmetry
- Analyze pattern for its symmetry, rotation,
reflection, or translation.
- Design
a piece of art that uses the
principals of pattern to create balance within the work.

- Emphasis is the topic of
the composition that holds the attention of the viewer’s mind.
- Rhythm is pattern that
uses variation in the placement of elements lending itself to a sense of
unpredictability.
- Movement is a suggestion of action or direction in
which the eye follows across a composition.
- Vocabulary: Emphasis, rhythm,
unpredictable, variation, movement
- Identify emphasis and rhythm in artwork.
- Assemble a 2D or 3D piece of art that has an emphasis
which uses rhythm and movement to captivate the viewer’s attention.
